COMMUNITY

BDO will continue to give back and build relationships within our local communities to make an even greater impact over the next 100 years.

  • Big Bike Challenge: Together they have raised $14,618 through this challenge and donated it to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
  • Calgary Corporate Challenge: Their office has been a proud supporter of this challenge for ten years and counting.
  • Kananaskis 100 Mile Relay: Our people find a variety of ways to get involved in this relay through fundraising, volunteering, and participation.
  • Calgary Zoo and more: We have donated over $38,000 to the Calgary Zoo, and raised more than $15,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Through their efforts, they collected $5,500 for the Mustard Seed, $5,000 for the Calgary Emergency Women’s Shelter, and canvased more than 15,000 meals for the Calgary Food Bank in support of our national Drive Away Hunger Campaign.

Like so many of our local BDO offices, our people in Calgary are always looking for ways to volunteer their time. We highlighted some of their initiatives below.

Our Greater Vancouver Area offices, including Langley, Whistler, Victoria, and Whitehorse have participated in community initiatives such as the annual Jean Up event to support BC Children’s Foundation. Over the past six years, they have raised approximately $64,000 for BC Children’s Hospital. BDO Partners Suky Cheema, former South Asian Committee Chair, and Danvir Roopra, former Cabinet Member for A Night of Miracles Gala, contributed a combined seven years serving as volunteers in South Asian community for BC Children’s Foundation. These efforts demonstrate a long-standing commitment to helping provide the best health care imaginable to kids across BC.

When BDO revamped its policy and asked employees to “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) to work, United Way in Lunenburg County, NS reached out about donating used BDO mobile devices and Kim Watt (former BDO CIO) became a champion of the program. All devices ready for donation are decommissioned and shipped out to Lunenburg County. The phones are donated to people in need, providing them with a lifeline during a difficult time in their lives. Since the program started in May 2017, 245 phones have been distributed with the bulk of them coming from BDO.

The people benefiting from this program are:

  • Women fleeing family violence
  • People suffering mental health issues
  • At risk youth
  • Looking for jobs or trying to further their education
  • Booking medical appointments
  • In need of enhanced personal security
  • People without access to the internet due to their current home location or because they don’t have a permanent home

Since 1968, BDO has proudly supported the United Way and donated almost $200,000 in that time.

Since 1968, BDO has proudly supported the United Way and donated almost $200,000 in that time. Over the years, donations have helped adults access materials for financial literacy training and develop computer literacy skills. Funds also support students with school supplies and lunch. BDO is happy to assist with strengthening the well-being of families, helping people experiencing homelessness, and ensuring children have what they need to succeed in school.

Stay Up Ottawa: Annually, members of the Ottawa office face the wintry weather for one night in December to increase awareness for youth homelessness while raising funds to provide shelter for those in need. BDO was ranked the top corporate fundraising team from 2015 to 2020 for the annual event, organized by the Youth Services Bureau. Over the last seven years, the BDO team raised nearly $100,000.

Kurling for Kids: A Montreal client since 2015, Kurling for Kids strives to improve the lives of children and their families at children’s hospitals. They raise funds for hospitals to provide leading medical treatments, programs and equipment for children, which would otherwise be out of reach with current budgets. Since 2015, the Montreal office has helped raise approximately $40,000 for Kurling for Kids.

The BDO Toronto West office actively supports charities within their community. Here are some highlights of the past and ongoing initiatives. BDO bowled for Circle 21 in support of the SickKids Down Syndrome Clinic, raising $45,000. The clinic is one of the first of its kind, providing a single point of access for addressing the medical and developmental needs of children under three affected by the syndrome. They have also supported the Heart and Stroke Foundation, raising $52,000, Special Olympics Ontario, successfully raising over $50,000, and Autism Speaks Canada, raising over $60,000 for research, awareness, and family services for those diagnosed with autism. They also raised $81,228 to help cover the cost of building a home with Habitat for Humanity in Brampton.

Starting in 2006 with $2 weekly donations, BDO Portage la Prairie office has now donated over $36,000 to various organizations. With 2021 donations now rolling in at a generous rate, the team likely celebrate reaching $40,000 soon. Many organizations have benefited from this initiative and it has touched every corner of the Central Plains region. With continued commitment from staff and partners, contributions to Blue Jean Friday will continue for many years.

Frontline workers have put their lives on the line to help us through the pandemic. BDO wanted to find a way to say thank you and participated in CPA Ontario’s Accounting for Bravery initiative in 2020. Our staff volunteered their time to complete personal tax returns for frontline workers, completing 130 returns for healthcare professionals.

The campaign has now grown to become the largest employee-led food drive in Canada, collecting over 60 million meals with BDO collecting over 6.4 million meals.

In October 2020, we launched BDO Goes the Distance, a virtual fundraising event in support of Drive Away Hunger. Our BDO team came together to run, ride or walk a combined 1,400km and asked their family and friends for donations. Our second annual event on September 12, 2021 allows friends of the firm to participate. Learn more and donate here.

BDO has helped local and national food banks through FCC Drive Away Hunger campaign for the past 13 years. The concept for the campaign originated in 2004 when an FCC employee drove an open-cab tractor trailer around Ontario for eight days to collect almost 60,000 lbs. of food. The campaign has now grown to become the largest employee-led food drive in Canada, collecting over 60 million meals with BDO collecting over 6.4 million meals.

The pandemic forced us to change our way of life, including finding creative ways to help those who need it the most. For our 2020 Drive Away Hunger campaign in support of food banks across the country, we did everything from a [virtual] hot wing eating contest to running a marathon. The 13th annual Farm Credit Canada (FCC) Drive Away Hunger campaign succeeded in raising 530,000 meals as a firm through mostly virtual fundraising efforts.

BDO is dedicated to supporting communities across Canada. Our people proudly volunteer their time to help meaningful organizations―together as one firm, within our local offices, or on an individual basis. Each year, we strive to instill positive changes through diverse charitable causes. We assisted 64 registered charities and 90 individual food banks just in the last year. This month, we’re highlighting some of ways we support our communities.
